May 11

Saturday, May 11th, is the day our neighbors across the Northland will have an easy opportunity to provide to those with fewer resources by giving to local food shelves. The 27th Annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive collected over 100,000 lbs. of donations from across the Northland in 2018. This is the largest single-day food drive in the country, and we are asking for your help to continue making this event as beneficial as possible to those with food insecurity!

The National Association of Letter Carriers, Head of the Lakes United Way, and Northland Food Shelves, are asking you to please fill one or more bags with non-perishable, unexpired, unopened food and place them by your mailboxes by 9:00 am, SATURDAY, May 11th. Volunteers will donate their time to help letter carriers collect the donations and distribute to local food pantries.

This timing of the food drive is important because families that rely on school meal programs won’t necessarily have access to that service in the summer. Families are more likely to utilize food shelves. This is your opportunity to keep these families well-nourished and your community healthy by donating on Saturday, May 11th by 9:00 am!

The most needed items include high proteins and cupboard necessities including canned meat, peanut butter, jelly, oatmeal, cereal, pasta, rice, canned vegetables, and canned fruits. To be mindful of resources and volunteers, we ask that you please avoid making donations of expired, unlabeled or dented cans, opened food items, produce, and homemade foods.

We are also looking for VOLUNTEERS to help collect food on the event day. If you are interested in helping, please email Scott Van Daele at svandaele@chumduluth.org.

Save the Date: Kick-off Press Conference for the Letter Carriers Food Drive is scheduled for Thursday, May 9th at 10 a.m. at Duluth Plaza Super One.
