Artifacts of the Fur Trade

An artifact display, slide show, and lecture on “Artifacts of the Fur Trade along the St. Louis River and in Carlton County” will be presented by David H. Peterson, lecturer for the Minnesota State Park system, at the Carlton County Historical Society on Tuesday, June 18, at 1 p.m. The program looks at the French, British, and American trading along the St. Louis River, Knife Portage (now Cloquet) and Carlton County from 1650 to 1850. From the 1600s through the 1850s every major North American fur trade company and numerous independent traders worked in the area retrieving animal furs while trading iron axes and other trade items.
Admission to the Historical Society is $3 for adults, $1 for children under 12, and free for members. The Museum is handicapped accessible. Call 879-1938 for further information. The Museum is located in the historic Shaw Memorial Library Building at 406 Cloquet Avenue in Cloquet.
