The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Alder and heavy icebreaker Mackinaw entered the Twin Ports Wednesday, March 20.

The next morning, the Mackinaw could be seen breaking up ice in the Duluth-Superior harbor. The icebreaker cut a 100-foot-wide path through Superior Bay just off the shore from Barkers Island in Superior.

The Kaye E. Barker was the first ship of the 2019 season to depart the Duluth-Superior port, making its way under the Aerial Lift Bridge on March 22. Escorted by the USCGC Mackinaw, the Kaye E. Barker was bound for Two Harbors to load iron ore.
