The Roger Blough passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge just after sunrise Wednesday morning, marking the start of the 2017 commercial shipping season in the Port of Duluth-Superior.
This is the first U.S.-flag laker to leave the port, now on its way to the CN Docks in Two Harbors to load iron ore, according to the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.
Another Great Lakes Fleet vessel, the Philip R. Clarke, is expected to leave for Two Harbors Wednesday night.
After loading their first cargo of the season, both ships will travel across Lake Superior toward Sault Ste. Marie, where the Soo Locks will open just after midnight Saturday, March 25.
