Six Ways to Ring in the New Year

Ready or not, here it comes. 2016 is right around the corner; have you determined your New Year’s resolution? Of course not! Like us, you have been focused on the many Duluth festivities happening in celebration of the turning of the calendar year. How ever do you decide? Fear not, for ventured around town to provide you six festive New Year’s locations (and their respective glass-raising beverages) worthy of that 12:00:00am ball drop.

Vikre Distillery | Cup O’ Kindness

Auld Lang Syne, the cocktail’s namesake, would be proud of this rendition of it’s traditional lyrics. Using Snooty Fox brewed kombucha, the Cup O’ Kindness is exactly that: a cup of throat warming, floral, locally distilled Vikre Juniper Gin paired with kombucha, simple syrup and lemon, concocted specifically for this New Year’s celebration. And if this perfect cocktail isn’t enough, guests will cheers to the New Year with a Vikre aquavit toast. The Vikre tasting room is overflowing with passion for the art of distillery and the drive for a perfect sip. Consider yourself warned, you may fall in love with this place.

Mayor’s New Year’s Eve Party at The Depot

Grab a glitter hat and noisemaker as you enter into Duluth’s who’s who of NYE parties.  Music galore – 80s cover band, Mynx, will perform upstairs in the Depot Great Hall, the popular rock/folk tunes of The Boomchucks downstairs in the train museum, and smooth jazz playing in The Underground, will make the Mayor’s New Year’s Eve Party at the Depot one heck of a classic party. Hors d’oeuvres will be provided along with Vikre Distillery whiskey samplings and FREE (yes, free!) Bent Paddle brews until kegs run out. That’s not it, folks. A champagne toast will be had as the clock strikes 12. This incredible party will be worth every cent of admission.

Tavern on the Hill | Your Grandmother’s Best Pies Moonshine

Not exactly their names, but boy do these drinks go down smooth. The fruit and pie flavored delicious cool beverages taken straight from the prohibition era (okay, that might be an exaggeration) do not disappoint (not an exaggeration). Apple pie, peach pie, and black cherry served in a rustic mason jar. The Tavern on the Hill signature moonshines will be half price during NYE happy hour 9pm to close. Hello, amazing deal. The late night happy hour also extends to additional drink specials and some of Tavern’s appetizers, with a champagne toast at midnight.

Beaner’s Central | Borealis Fermentary Brews (and all day musicians) on Tap

You don’t need to be a night owl to enjoy all of Duluth’s New Year’s Eve happenings. Beaner’s Central has already launched their festivities beginning at 6:30 this morning! An incredible line up of 24 bands and musicians will fill the walls of this self-titled “Concert Coffeehouse,” celebrating the turn of the calendar at midnight with Lord Montague. In addition to its music, the brews will be flowing. Beaner’s is one of only three select places with local Borealis Fermentary Belgian-style delicious ales on tap. You gotta try one.

Black Water | June in January Martini

A Duluth nightlife staple, Black Water Lounge knows just how to serenade your evening palate with award-winning martinis and well-paired food items. This New Year’s Eve, relax with the cool, sexy sounds of Maxi Childs Trio live jazz and a bubbling June in January martini. Or a craft beer on tap. Or my personal favorite – a raspberry mojito. A champagne toast will be had at the stroke of midnight. And if that wasn’t enough, Thursday’s Ladies Night pricing is game on, offering $5 martinis and half-off sushi.

Zeitgeist | Keep it Easy Champagne

At Zeitgeist Arts, you’ll do exactly that this New Year’s Eve – keep it easy, keep it simple. This low key, down to Earth celebration  is offering drink specials and board games 9pm to midnight with a champagne toast. Your attendance will do more than salud 2016 and have a great time. You will also be supporting this authentic Duluth nonprofit organization growing Duluth’s rich art and culture scene.

The options for tonight’s festivities are endless, but the six venues above will have countdowns to the new year that will create memories for years to come. As the traditional tune Auld Lang Syne reminds us not to forget our friends, let’s, too, not forget that Duluth is bursting with friends, opportunities, and enthusiasm to be celebrated as we say adieu to 2015. Tonight, let’s raise a glass and tip your hat as we ring in 2016 in true Duluth fashion.
