A BIT OF HISTORY
Seven years in the making, this impressive resort, anchored by four silos was built on a foundation of the Duluth waterfront’s rich history.
Construction of the original Pier B, as it was known, occurred in 1890 by Kelley Island Lime and Transport Company to facilitate the storage of limestone shipped by steamer from its mine on Kelley’s Island on Lake Erie. Pier B comprised 7.4 acres and by 1992, no less than 10 piers had been constructed along the harbor front to facilitate the rapidly growing mining and timber industries. These piers are now the location for the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, Great Lakes Aquarium and Bayfront Festival Park.
By 1920, Huron Portland Cement Company had constructed the four adjoining silos to facilitate the storage of powdered cement. The silos acted as a giant vacuum cleaner as they sucked the powdered cement from the ships into the four, 45-foot diameter silos. Lafarge Cement Company operated the facility until approximately 2008, when they consolidated operations to a facility in Superior, WI on the south side of the industrial waterfront.
Recognizing the property’s tremendous potential, local developers Alessandro Giuliani and Sanford Hoff assembled a group of investors and acquired the site. From the start, Giuliani and Hoff were dedicated to saving the historic 100-year-old silos to preserve the rich heritage of the site. While the silos are not currently being utilized, they hold significant opportunity for future expansion.
Pier B offers a wide variety of lodging options, from standard guest rooms to the King Marina Deck Room, which provides a great view of the Duluth Harbor Lift Bridge and Bayfront Festival Park. This room has a king bed, mini fridge, coffee maker and a luxury bathroom. While sitting on the deck you can enjoy listening to great music and invite friends or family to join you on your own private deck for cocktails.
In the winter, you’ll get the best seat in the house for viewing the ice-skating rink in the boat slip and the spectacular Bentleyville Holiday Lights. Pier B Resort will be happy to provide extra seating and an appetizer/ beverage menu if needed.
The Family Suite can sleep up to eight people. This unit consists of two connecting rooms. One room has two queen beds with a seating area and a bathroom with a tub. The other room has one bunkbed and a double bed with a tub in the bathroom. This room is also complete with a mini-fridge and a coffee maker.
Pier B is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail and outstanding food, and to hang your hat at the end of a great Duluth day. For more information, visit pierbresort.com.
